The Congo Research Group and Bridgeway Foundation Release Report on the Allied Democratic Forces Rebellion

‘While conflict dynamics around Beni are complex and extremely difficult to parse, the ADF is a critical player there,’ says Jason Stearns, director of the Congo Research Group.

Supported by the Bridgeway Foundation and drawing on 35 videos posted on private social media channels, this report provides a rare glimpse into the ADF organization. The videos portray ADF attacks, medical care for their wounded, martial arts exhibitions, indoctrination of children, and propaganda messages. The videos can be seen by request to CRG.

Finding a solution for the violence around Beni will entail dealing with its complexity. As Stearns argues, ‘Given how interwoven the ADF is with other, local armed groups, a comprehensive strategy will require rendering local administration and security services more accountable, dismantling racketeering networks, and targeting regional recruitment and support networks of the ADF.’
